What Are Integers?
Integers are a fundamental concept in mathematics that represent whole numbers, including both positive and negative numbers, as well as zero. In other words, integers are the set of numbers that do not contain fractions or decimal parts. The set of integers is denoted by the symbol Z.
Here are some key characteristics of integers:
Positive Integers: Positive integers are whole numbers greater than zero. They are represented by the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on.
Negative Integers: Negative integers are whole numbers less than zero. They are represented by the numbers -1, -2, -3, -4, and so on.
Zero: Zero is considered an integer. It represents the absence of quantity or the neutral point between positive and negative numbers.
Counting Numbers: Integers include all counting numbers (also known as natural numbers) along with their additive inverses (negatives) and zero. Counting numbers are the positive integers starting from 1.
Additive Inverse: Each positive integer has a corresponding negative integer, and vice versa, such that when they are added together, they yield zero. For example, 3 and -3 are additive inverses of each other because 3 + (-3) = 0.
Integers are used in various mathematical operations and contexts, including arithmetic, algebra, number theory, and cryptography. They provide a framework for representing quantities, magnitudes, and directions in mathematical reasoning and problem-solving.
