Integer Operations

In previous lessons, you learned how to add, subtract, multiply and divide integers. There are many rules to remember so it's easy to get confused. This lesson will review all the rules learned for operations with integers. You will then be given a mixed set of exercises to complete.

Rules for Adding Integers
The sum of two positive integers is a positive integer.
The sum of two negative integers is a negative integer.
To find the sum of a positive and a negative integer, find the absolute value of each integer and then subtract these values. The result takes the sign of the integer with the larger absolute value.

Rules for Subtracting Integers

To subtract an integer, add its opposite.

Rules for Multiplying and Dividing Integers
Like signs yield a positive result.
Unlike signs yield a negative result.
