Math Awareness Month - April, 2010

Math Awareness Month is held each year in April, and is sponsored by the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics. This year's theme is Mathematics and Sports. While most people are familiar with sports, they are not always aware of the important role that mathematics plays in sports.
A myriad of data on players, teams, divisions and leagues is provided by the media and the sports world. Tables and graphs are used to summarize this data. Batting Average and Earned Run Average are common baseball stats. A team's Win-Loss Percentage is tracked in many sports. Probability is used for Win Expectancy in baseball and Win Probability in football. The NBA Draft Lottery is an annual event that uses combinatorics and probability in the selection process. We invite you to explore these and other topics with us! Resources and activities for MAM 2010 are listed below. Online and offline activities have been provided for all levels of math!
