I'm taking an online class the teacher doesn't help us with the hw at all and we don't have any sample videos, or work we can look at for most of these problems. I tried youtube but had no luck finding video's to this particular question. I'm supposed to find an ordered pair for each solution and I seem to be stuck on one particular problem. How would I solve the problem below?
y=1/2x-1;(-8, ) ( ,2)

I know the first half of the problem. I know I'm supposed to plug in for x and y. What I don't understand is what to do after I plug in the 2? do I add, multiply, or divide?
This is the part I am stuck at. I don't know what to do after this. I do know the answer is 6 I just don't know how it could be 6.

Hi yaz, you are asked to find ordered pairs (x,y) for which y=1/2x-1.

I assume you mean y=(1/2)x-1 which is what you wrote?
Many people will write the same thing for 1/(2x)-1 and for 1/(2x-1).
Given that the answer to your question is 6, I think you meant what you wrote.

You have been asked to find an ordered pair (x,y) for which y=2 and y=(1/2)x-1.

You already know the value of y, you just have to find x.

Since y=2 and y=(1/2)x-1,

Know we solve for x.
The first thing we want to do is get rid of the -1 term on the right side of the equation.
We can do this by adding one to both sides of the equation.
2 + 1 = (1/2)x -1 + 1
3 = (1/2)x

Now we want to get rid of the 1/2 term on the right side.
We can do this by multiplying both sides by 2.
2*3 = 2*(1/2)*x

The ordered pair you are looking for is (6,2).
