applications involving percents and rates:
Wayne County has a sale tax rate of 7%. How much does Mike's Honda Civic Cost before tax if the total cost of the car plus tax is $13,888.60?
i set up the problem like X+0.07=13,888.60 but when i solve it the answer are total wrong~ can someone please tell me what part did i miss? also if anyone knows any tips on solving word problems please tell me. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Ok...if the sales tax is 7%, then you will pay 7% of the purchase price for tax.
If the purchase price is x dollars, the sales tax will be 7% of x, or 0.07x.
The total you will pay on a purchase of x dollars is x + 0.07x....or,
1x + 0.07x, or 1.07x
Ok??
If the total you pay for the vehicle, including tax, is $13,888.60, then
1.07x = 13888.60 |

tax on car = 0.07 * X
X + 0.07 * X = 13,888.60
1.07 * X = 13888.60
