This page lists the Learning Objectives for each core lesson in Unit 8 of 13.
Range
The student will be able to:
- Define data and range.
- Evaluate examples in which the range of a set of whole numbers, decimals or integers is computed.
- State the procedure for finding the range of a set of numbers.
- Compute the range of a set of numbers.
- Apply range procedures to solve problems.
Mean
The student will be able to:
- Define arithmetic mean.
- Evaluate examples in which the mean of a set of whole numbers or decimals is computed.
- State the procedure for finding the mean of a set of numbers.
- Compute the mean of a set of numbers.
- Apply mean procedures to solve problems.
Non-Routine Mean
The student will be able to:
- Evaluate non-routine problems that involve an arithmetic mean.
- Find the sum of n numbers given the mean and the value of n.
- Find n given the sum of n numbers and the mean.
- Find the missing number in a set of data given the mean and the other numbers in the set.
- Solve non-routine problems involving an arithmetic mean.
Median
The student will be able to:
- Define median.
- Evaluate examples in which the median of a set of whole numbers or decimals is computed.
- State the procedure for finding the median of a set of data.
- Evaluate median problems with an even number of items in the data set.
- State the revised procedure for finding the median of a set of data.
- Compute the median of a data set with an odd or an even number of items.
- Apply median procedures to solve problems.
Mode
The student will be able to:
- Define mode and bimodal.
- Evaluate examples in which the mode of a set of whole numbers, decimals or integers is computed.
- Evaluate examples in which there is no mode.
- Evaluate examples in which the data is bimodal.
- Find the mode of a set of data.
- Identify the difference between sets of data with no mode and sets of data with a mode of zero.
- Apply mode procedures to solve problems.
Practice Exercises
The student will be able to:
- Identify the concepts and procedures needed to solve each problem.
- Apply basic statistics concepts to solve simple problems.
- Compute the range, mean, median and mode of a set of data.
Challenge Exercises
The student will be able to:
- Analyze each problem to identify the given information.
- Identify the concepts and procedures needed to solve each problem.
- Apply basic statistics concepts to solve non-routine problems.
- Identify connections between basic statistics and the real world.
- Develop strong problem-solving skills.
Solutions
The student will be able to:
- Analyze the solution for each exercise presented in this unit.
